10 Latin Americans and a Spaniard compete for the Biennial Vargas Llosa Prize

The jury of the Biennial Mario Vargas Llosa Prize has gone through the 255 works sent by publishing houses, agents and writers, and now the list has been reduced to only 11 books. The final decision for this second edition of the $100,000 award, which aspires to become a landmark prize in Spanish literature, will be announced in April.

The 2016 Fundación Cuatrogatos Prize has been given to 20 books for children and young adults written by Ibero-American creators

The annual competition judged almost a thousand works published in Spanish by over 120 publishers from across 16 countries. The prize seeks to help distinguished works find as many homes, schools, libraries and other spaces as possible so that young readers can encounter books of great quality.

73,144 books published in 2015

“The Spanish publishing sector registered a total of 73,144 titles in 2015 according to data collected by the ISBN Agency, representing a slight increase (1%) compared to 2014 (72,416 titles). However, it must be taken into account that these figures don’t include titles registered by self-publishers. During 2015 the percentage of titles published in digital format was 26% of all publishing output, representing another 1% increase on the previous year (19,376), showing that publishers are still supporting the format.
