The Argentine Ariel Urquiza wins the Casa de las Américas Prize with a story collection

“In Ni una sola voz en el cielo (Not a Single Voice in the Sky), the author, who was born in Tres Arroyos, presents different Latin American perspectives on drug trafficking.The Argentine writer Ariel Urquiza today won the Casa de las Américas prize for literature with his unpublished book Ni una sola voz en el cielo (Not a Single Voice in the Sky), which explores drug-related issues in Latin America.

The Argentine writer Ariel Urquiza today won the Casa de las Américas prize for literature with his unpublished book Ni una sola voz en el cielo (Not a Single Voice in the Sky), which explores drug-related issues in Latin America. The jury, made up of Pedro Juan Gutiérrez (Cuba), Santiago Gamboa (Colombia), Ana Quiroga (Argentina), Eduardo Lalo (Puerto Rico) and Ramiro Sanchiz (Uruguay), hailed the “narrative talent, virtuoso dialogues and plots that address critical issues” in the region. In Ni una sola voz en el cielo, Urquiza addresses the problem of drug trafficking. “The characters are generally assassins. But my stories aren’t all violent. There’s also room for the characters’ inner lives in which they continuously question the situations in which they find themselves. The same characters appear in different stories and form a wider plot, similar to a novel (…).”
