73,144 books published in 2015

“The Spanish publishing sector registered a total of 73,144 titles in 2015 according to data collected by the ISBN Agency, representing a slight increase (1%) compared to 2014 (72,416 titles). However, it must be taken into account that these figures don’t include titles registered by self-publishers. During 2015 the percentage of titles published in digital format was 26% of all publishing output, representing another 1% increase on the previous year (19,376), showing that publishers are still supporting the format.

In spite of the increase in the number of titles and the sector’s support of digital books, which almost reached 20,000 this year, the Federation of Spanish Publishing Unions (FGEE), continues to insist on the need for different Public Administrations to make a concerted effort to develop plans to encourage reading with a substantial increase in the budget for the acquisition of books. It is worth remembering that a CIS survey a year ago showed that only 35% of people in Spain said they were frequent readers and another 35% rarely or almost never read at all.”
