Aside from Mexico, U.S. is the country with more Spanish-speakers

Latinos are the largest minority in the United States with 52 million people, according to the Pew Research Hispanic Center. Except for Mexico, that is more Spanish-speakers than in any country of Latin America, and projections are that the figure will triple by 2050, The Raw Story reports.

2013 Madrid Book fair closed with improved sales

The Madrid Book Fair closed Sunday with 7.1 million euros in sales, representing 9.3% over the previous year, a positive balance, reports El Mundo.

The Spanish Evangelical Publishers Association (SEPA), has named B&H Publishing Group Publisher of the Year. The winner also received six other awards, including Book of the Year for "La Resolución para Hombres" (The Resolution for Men), while "El Desafo del Amor" (The Love Dare) was recognized for selling more than 250,000 copies, The Alabama Baptist reports.

Días de Cine Reading Club presents 'Cuernos de mujer' until June 23rd

The movie, based on Carmen Rico Godoy's book, will be available at Días de Cine Reading Club until June 23rd, 2013. This initiative is sponsored by the America Reads Spanish program and the American Library Association to promote literature and the Spanish language in American libraries and universities.

Thanks to a grant, school in Kansas will improve Spanish programs

Scott Dual-Language Magnet in Topeka, Kansas, will receive thousands of dollars for Spanish-language materials, including books for its library. The federal grant also will pay for a new coordinator for the bilingual program, a counselor specializing in behavioral issues, and a bilingual mathematics and reading specialist, The Topeka Capital Journal reports.

Latina moms use social and digital media to introduce young readers to literature

A group of Latina bloggers has launched an online effort called “Latinas 4 Latino Literature” (LL4L) to increase literacy among Hispanic youth and encourage publishing houses to publish more Latino authors, ABC News/Univisión reports.

BookExpo America 2013 featured Mexico in its “Global Market Forum”

Jesús Alonso-Regalado, bibliographer and outreach librarian at the State University of New York at Albany, writes a piece on the Global Market Forum “Reading Mexico,” part of the recent BookExpo 2013 in New York. The forum explored the publishing industry of that country, including sales figures, book production and distribution, and digital projects. The author also gives his take on Mexico's exhibition at the fair.
