Synopsis

Y es que nuestro perro se cayó en la nieve y, rescatado por un jaguar, fue a dar en un poblado mapuche. Allí creció con su compañero Aukamañ, el niño indio que era como un hermano para él, y allí aprendió a respetar a la naturaleza y a todas sus criaturas. Sin embargo, ahora debe obedecer las órdenes de aquellos para los que trabaja y dar caza a un fugitivo misterioso, escondido más allá del río. ¿Adónde nos llevará la caza?. El destino está escrito en su propio nombre, Leal, y le llevará a una situación que pondrá a prueba, pasado tanto tiempo, su fidelidad a viejos lazos de afecto.

“The new story by Luis Sepúlveda (Ovalle, Chile, 1949) is told as though he were regaling it to his grandchildren by the fireside. A 20th century fable, Historia de un perro llamado Leal (The Story of a Dog Named Loyal), is narrated from the point of view of the dog himself; a hungry, mistreated German Shepherd who is forced to follow the trail of an injured Native American. Infused with poetry and nostalgia for the past, right from the beginning of the story (‘The pack of men are scared’) the reader identifies with Afmau (Loyal in Mapuche). (…) Sepúlveda uses sensitive, poetic prose to depict the history of the Mapuche people and their extermination, and also to denounce the destruction of nature.”
