Synopsis
The short and extraordinary story of Carlos Pizarro is that of a tragic hero. Robust, unbeatable, and full of virtue, Pizarro went from militant communism to becoming a guerrilla soldier, from there to amnesty, and later went on to become a candidate for president of Colombia. This novel is a chronicle of his life, both historical and personal, and through the tale of reliable facts the reader delves into the fiction. Beyond the well-known facts, between the inevitable drug trafficking, a guerrilla who must keep shooting in order to negotiate peace, the absence of a national plan, and the indomitable will to fight, in this posthumous work by Carlos Fuentes, readers will get to know a character who is as epic as he is complex, vulnerable, and full of love and hope.
Reviews
Aquiles o El Guerrillero y el asesino, by Carlos Fuentes, Fondo de Cultura Económica/Alfaguara
June 15th, 2016
“Carlos Fuentes’ posthumous novel Aquiles o El Guerrillero y el asesino (Achilles, or the Warrior and the Murderer) seeks to understand the violence of the warriors of Colombia, and by extension Latin America, asking many major questions. It soon becomes clear that this is one of his most committed and daring works. (…) the author spent over 20 years on this novel, which follows the life and adventures of Carlos Pizarro Leongómez (1951-1990), who, after leading a guerrilla faction, laid down his arms and 45 days later competed in presidential elections for a centre-left party.
Halfway between historical chronicle, novelized biography and fictionalization of real events, the book begins with Pizarro’s final days, when a young assassin kills him in 1990 on an Avianca plane, a crime in which Colombian intelligence agents were involved.”
The Mexican edition has been launched with a first print-run of 15,000 copies and it will be published simultaneously in Spain, Argentina, Colombia and Chile at the end of June.
