Synopsis

Globally, we are experiencing one of the most dramatic and devastating situations one can recall during the last century. Mexico tops the fatality list among the 20 nations most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Laurie Ann Ximénez-Fyvie, Doctor of Medical Sciences from Harvard University, points out that misinformation, the rejection of the use of face masks, zero controls at the borders, and the absence of widespread testing, are just some of the factors that have caused such a state of emergency in the country.

Through science, experience, and observation of the situation at the global and national level, the researcher also indicates that "the actions and messages of [Hugo López-Gatell,] Mexico's Undersecretary of Health, have always contained a dose of ambiguity and contradiction." She acknowledges that actions have been taken, but in her point of view these have been applied at the wrong time, and have proven insufficient given the magnitude of the problem. "The political ambitions of the official supposedly dedicated to caring for the health of Mexicans are evident (...) However, accountability will come sooner or later. History does not usually treat kindly those scientists who, in the interests of a misunderstood common good and lacking the ethics that their profession demands, have abused their power and position, risking or sacrificing people's lives.

One of Dr. Ximénez-Fyvie's principal goals with this book is to empower the general public with scientifically valid information. "I hope that this text will serve as a testimony from which lessons can be derived that may in the future prevent repeating mistakes like the ones that have been committed in this case (...) The pandemic was inevitable, but the thousands of deaths were not."
