Born in Barcelona in 1964, Ruiz Zafon worked in advertising for several years before relocating to Los Angeles to become a screenwriter and launch his literary career.
He won the Edebe literary prize for young adult fiction for El Príncipe de la niebla, and followed that up with three other young-adult novels: El Palacio de la Medianoche, Las Luces de Septiembre and Marina.
La Sombra del viento, published in 2001, was his first novel for adults; the work sold more than a million copies and was a finalist for the prestigious Fernando Lara Novel Prize.
Ruiz Zafon’s books have been translated into many different languages and have been published in more than 50 countries.
