Dulce Chacón

Spanish writer, playwright, and poet, Dulce Chacón was born in Zafra, Badajoz, on June 3rd, 1954.

Her family moved to Madrid after the death of her father, also a poet, when Chacón was barely eleven years old. Her first collection of poems, "Querrán escribirle nombre", was not published until 1992. She later won awards such as the Ciudad de Irún and the Azorín Novel Prize for "Cielos de barro", a work that launched her professional career as a writer.

Dulce Chacón was a politically committed writer with strong leftist convictions. She publicly opposed the Iraq War and also advocated for the recovery of historical memory related to the Franco regime.

In 2002, she published "La voz dormida", which became her final novel. Chacón died in Madrid on December 3rd, 2003, of cancer. A year after her death, the Dulce Chacón Award was launched in her honor. It recognizes works in Spanish originally published and printed during the year prior to the competition.
