A great Spanish writer and poet, she focused on children and young adults and addressed themes such as equality, pacifism, and the environment.
Gloria Fuertes was born on July 28th,1917, in the Lavapiés neighborhood of Madrid and died of cancer on November 27th, 1998, in the same city. She belonged to the first post-war literary generation, commonly known as the Generation of '50, and also to the Postismo poetry movement.
From a humble, working-class family, she enrolled at the Institute of Professional Education for Women at the age of 14, earning degrees in various fields such as shorthand, childcare, and literature. She later studied library science and English at the International Institute, eventually becoming a professor at Buckell University in the United States.
Fuertes worked in various jobs while publishing her first verses and contributing to various media outlets, especially children's and girls' magazines. In 1950, she published her first collection of poems, Isla ignorada. She cultivated the theater, with her first play, Prometeo, at the Theater of the Institute of Hispanic Culture. Her recognition as a poet was overshadowed, at the end of the century, by the fame she gained on children's programs when she shared her poetry with children (Un globo, dos globos, tres globos y La cometa blanca).
