Spanish writer born in Elda, Alicante, on January 29th, 1957, Elia Barceló studied Anglo-German Philology and eventually earned her doctorate in Hispanic Philology from the University of Innsbruck. She is a professor of Hispanic literature in Austria.
Barceló is considered one of the three great fantasy writers in the Spanish language, along with Cuban Daína Chaviano and Argentine Angélica Gorodischer. Aside from the fantasy genre, which made her popular and for which she won various awards such as the UPC Short Novel Award and the Ignotus Award, she has also developed young adult fiction, which has earned her great recognition and two Edebé awards in 1997 and 2006.
In 2007, she was recognized by the Spanish Association of Fantasy, Science Fiction and Horror with the Gabriel Award, an honorary award reserved for the most important figures in the fantasy genre in Spain, being the first woman to receive it.
