Claribel Alegría

Nicaraguan writer and poet, Claribel Alegría has also distinguished herself as an essayist and translator.

Alegría spent her childhood in El Salvador and Santa Pola until she went to study in the United States in 1943, where she graduated in Philosophy and Literature. She married the American writer and diplomat Darwin J. Flakoll, and from this marriage their four children were born. She lived in the United States until 1985, when she decided to return to Nicaragua to help in the aftermath of the war.

Her work, which focuses on the realities of her time and her political and social commitment, has been widely recognized with awards such as the Casa de las Américas Poetry Prize and numerous honorary doctorates around the world, among many other recognitions. In 2017, she was awarded the Queen Sofía Poetry Prize.
