Almudena Grandes

Spanish author Almudena Grandes (1960-2021) was one of the most important writers in contemporary Spanish literature.

Grandes studied Geography and History at the Complutense University of Madrid, although her career was dedicated to literature, where the weight of history, especially that of Spain, plays a fundamental role.

Among her works, we must highlight titles such as Las edades de Lulú, which achieved great success in 1989 by winning the Sonrisa Vertical erotic literature award. Bigas Luna's film adaptation of this novel was a definitive boost to her career, both in Spain and internationally. Also worth mentioning is Inés y la alegría—for which she received the Elena Poniatowska Prize and the Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz Prize—the beginning of a series dedicated to the Spanish Civil War and the postwar period, Episodios de una guerra interminable. This title was followed by four others.
