Guillermo Arriaga Jordán was born in 1958 in Mexico City. He spent his youth in Unidad Modelo, a violent neighborhood that largely inspires his screenplays and novels.
He earned a degree in Communication Sciences and a master's degree in History from the Universidad Iberoamericana. Arriaga acknowledges the influence of Ernest Hemingway and William Faulkner on his works.
A writer, film and television director, producer, and professor (at the Instituto Tecnológico de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City, and the Universidad Católica Andrés Bello in Caracas), he is best known for his collaboration as a screenwriter with director Alejandro González Iñárritu, together creating renowned films such as Amores Perros, 21 Grams, and Babel.
