Peruvian writer, politician, and essayist, Mario Vargas Llosa was born on March 28th, 1936, in Arequipa, and died on April 13th, 2025, in Lima.
He was one of the great authors of the 20th century and a prominent member of the Latin American boom. His work has received notable international recognition, including the Nobel Prize for Literature, which he received in 2010.
From a very young age, Vargas Llosa was closely involved in the world of literature, as a child, as an avid reader and as a teenager as a writer. During this time, he began inventing stories, something his father disliked, and sent him to a military school for his secondary education. His experience there would be the seed of his first novel.
Vargas Llosa ended up studying Law and Literature at the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos; it was in this environment that his interest in politics began to grow. After completing his studies, he began working as a journalist while continuing his literary work. In 1957, he embarked on his first literary career, publishing short stories and tales while working as a reporter for various media outlets.
