Carmen Conde

A Spanish writer, Carmen Conde was born in Cartagena on August 15th, 1907, and died in Majadahonda on January 8th, 1996.

Considered one of the most prominent voices of the Generation of '27, she was the first woman to be a full member of the Royal Spanish Academy. Throughout her career, she wrote poetry, novels, short stories, plays, and essays.

After spending part of her childhood in Melilla, Conde studied teaching at the Normal School of Murcia, completing her degree at the Normal School of Albacete. During this time, she published her first poems. She worked as a teacher and, with her husband, founded the Popular University of Cartagena.

During the Spanish Civil War, she studied Philosophy and Literature at the University of Valencia.
