Synopsis
Ian Wharton es un joven ejecutivo cuya vida está condicionada por dos hechos principales: su capacidad de memoria eidética y su relación con el señor Broadhust, que se hace llamar entre otras cosas El Gran Controlador y mago de lo cotidiano. Ian, de niño, conoció al señor Broadhust, quien lo introdujo en la magia negra y el esoterismo, aunque de un modo un tanto peculiar, obligándole a no practicar sexo con mujeres bajo la amenaza de que se le partiría el pene. Ian termina en la consulta de un psiquiatra, el doctor Gyggle, que hace extraños experimentos con drogadictos, y que le tratará de ayudar a recuperarse.
Está dividido en dos partes.
El libro primero redactado en primera persona y que se titula así precisamente (Primera persona) narra la vida del personaje principal, Ian, su infancia, sus experiencias en el camping de caravanas donde vivía, rodado de gitanos, con su madre, sus primos, tíos, etc, todo ello marcado por la ausencia de su padre, y el carácter fuerte de su madre, que le producía una gran atracción. También, y lo que es más importante, su relación con Broadhust, descrito de una forma grotesca, como un gordo de aspecto muy extraño, y comportamientos aún más extraños, que iniciará a Ian en rituales y prácticas de lo más rocambolesco, aprovechando ese potencial del joven como eidético. Ian, además, parece poseer la capacidad de proyectar su imaginación en mundos virtuales de un modo casi de viaje astral.
