Synopsis

Great Chilean author Rafael Gumucio has written a moving biography about one of the great Spanish language poets.

When Nicanor Parra won the 2012 Miguel de Cervantes Prize, Spanish literature revealed to the public one of its best kept secrets. Long before, his home in Las Cruces had become a sort of pilgrimage for an entire generation of young Chilean writers. Rafael Gumucio went to Las Cruces for the first time when he was barely thirty-two years old, ready to discuss his books with the antipoet who was already in his eighties. But Parra only wanted to talk about one of the many columns that the author published in the newspapers. He liked one of his columns out of the thousands he had written, and it was all about that one and nothing else.

Gumucio continued to visit Parra diligently, but that first meeting sealed the type of relationship they would have: Parra would project his overwhelming shadow full of intelligence and talent, and Gumucio would juggle admiration, bewilderment, and terror under that shadow. Starting from an immense work of research, going back into his own memories, and the memory of his relationship with Parra, Gumucio wrote a book whose title condenses the immeasurable complexity of one of the greatest Spanish-speaking poets; a moving biography that sheds light on each moment of this unique man’s life.
