Synopsis

In Argentina in 1956, a failed coup against the military government that removed Juan Perón from office a year before triggered a clandestine operation designed to eliminate people opposed to the regime. In a garbage dump on the outskirts of the capital, a group of civilians were shot before martial law was decreed.

In the weeks that followed, a rumor spread throughout the city that some of them had survived. Walsh managed to find one of these alleged survivors, and after listening to his testimony began a dangerous and obsessive investigation to find the truth.

Reviews

Reviewed by: Paloma Graciani

A pioneering work in the genre of the non-fiction novel, which relates a real event in novelized form, namely, the execution by firing squad of groups of civilians suspected of having formed part in counter-coup against the military dictatorship in 1956. As such, Walsh introduces political criticism into the police story, and enriches the genre. Committed to the revolution to the very end, he joined the list of those sadly known as the disappeared of the Argentine dictatorship.
