Synopsis
Mario Conde, a man about to turn sixty and who feels more distressed and skeptical than usual about his country, unexpectedly receives a request from an old friend from school, Bobby, who asks for his help to recover the statue of a stolen black virgin. Conde finds out that this object is far more precious than he was led to believe, and his friend confessed that it belonged to his Spanish grandfather, who having fled from the Civil War, brought it with him from a shrine located in the Catalan Pyrenees. In the gutters of Havana, Conde finds a suspect whom they end up killing. After another accomplice's murder, Conde finds out an unexpected group of foreign gallery owners and collectors interested in medieval wood work, and inevitably bumps into the homicide police unit of Havana. But in interlayered chapters, The transparency of time also tells the statue's epic over the centuries, a black virgin from the last crusade to a shrine in the Pyrinees, brought by an Antoni Barral, and another Antoni Barral will be the one who recovers it and is forced to embark as a stowaway heading to Havana.
