This work is of special interest because of the author's cultural education as well as his knowledge of the Nahuatl language and his ability to decipher Aztec codexes, thus providing us with first-hand information about and from the Native Americans. This Franciscan friar, who rivals Bartolomé de las Casas in importance, defended the Indians against the abuses committed against them, although he did not condemn forced religious conversion. Even so, his work is an invitation to delve into the wonder of Aztec civilization and the Nahuatl language and etymologies.
