Lemebel, the "enfant terrible" of current Chilean writing, had been writing on the "margins" during the Pinochet dictatorship. His text captures with much wit that tragic time for his country with the voice of some one who has endured that tragedy for not conforming to the norm. When asked once, if he wanted to play with dolls as a child, he noted, "I wanted to be the doll!" That's the beauty of Lemebel's narrative, recently translated into English as My Tender Matador.
