La Reina Isabel cantaba rancheras is probably the best known work by this Chilean writer, who until he was eleven years old, lived in small saltpeter mining towns in northern Chile, and thereafter moved to the city of Antofagasta, where he worked at a variety of jobs. He started writing poetry and short stories, and later devoted himself to novels that are characterized by their forceful and expressive originality, and populated by highly realistic characters. He is a two-time winner (1994 and 1996) of the National Book Council Prize. In 2010 he was awarded the Alfaguara Prize for his novel El arte de la resurrección. He is currently one of the most widely-read writers in Chile.
