Piglia fictionalizes a real event that took place in Argetina in 1965. The event was a bank robbery with the covert participation of various police officers and politicians, the treachery of the bank robbers who decide to flee with the money and the subsequent police chase. In preparing the novel, the author had access to confidential materials (court witnesses, the transcription of the secret recordings made by the police during the robbery, the testimonial declarations, and journalistic accounts) that allow him to reconstruct the events and plot, the characters and their speech, and the time in general, with great precision.
