The narrator introduces the book as the "suaves recuerdos" (gentle memories) of Mama Blanca. On the surface full of nostalgia, the political and social conflict of 19th century Venezuela are always in the background. Humble workers on the hacienda are described with great tenderness, among them Vicente Cochocho who occasionally disappears to lead rebels whor are fighting against the government.
