For this excellent work, this Nicaraguan writer won Alfaguara Prize for the Novel in 1998. In this novel, Rubén Darío, Anastasio Somoza, and a sizeable cross-section of Nicaraguan society make appearances during the period from 1907, year in which Rubén Darío returns to his native land, until 1956, when Somoza is assassinated. Sergio Ramírez has fashioned here an apt metaphor of the political and cultural history of Nicaragua.
