The Mexican novelist and essayist José Joaquín Blanco (Mexico City, 1951) has compiled in this volume the central poetical, narrative, theatrical and historical texts of the viceroyalty of New Spain, thereby rescuing an epoch of literary and cultural vigor and artistry which has been unjustly forgotten, and which becomes essential for a full understanding of today's Mexico. In the introductory essay, Blanco offers the reader an overview of the literary output of New Spain and its major figures, giving them the due truly owed to them because of their historical and literary value.
