This is one of the classics of Spanish literature. Its searing social commentary may sometimes prove frightening to the reader, but at the same time it reflects the atmosphere of the age with more than a modicum of realism. Moreover, Lazarillo himself is such a strong and unforgettable character that he has become the archetypal anti-hero.
