The voyages of the Alción, a dilapidated freighter, in search of occasional cargoes parallels, in imagery and sense, the shipwreck of the love of its Captain, the Basque Jon Iturri, for the Lebanese girl Warda Bashur, younger sister of the ship’s owner. The search for one more port before the tramp steamer gives out corresponds to Jon’s obstinate desire for Warda, to a love condemned to disaster beforehand, to a pair of lovers separated by a unbridgeable gulf.
