Taken from a line of William Shakespeare, "The uncertain glory of an April day", the title of this novel, to my taste one of the best, and concomitantly perhaps one the least known about Civil War, alludes to the proclamation of the Second Spanish Republic in April 1931. Constantly rewritten by its author, it was first published in a censored version in Spain, and then was published whole in French and in exile. Three characters and a War, that functions not as a setting but rather as a protagonist, with its interminable times of suspense at an inactive front, in lower Aragon, make room somehow for love and reflection. It includes descriptions of the struggles between communists and anarchists, the bombings of cities and the rebellions of the rearguard, the dispersion of 1939 and the sad and desolate aftermath.
