Bookstore sales in Spain during the first quarter exceed figures from 2019 and 2020.

Bookstores celebrate Book Day with optimism. Just a year ago, Spanish bookstores had their doors closed due to the State of Emergency caused by the pandemic.

Today, although capacity restrictions and reduced hours continue in some areas, they are celebrating April 23rd, Book Day with their communities of readers.  Hundreds of activities are being celebrated throughout the country, with their recommendations, as well as with the optimism of a closing of the year 2020 not as tragic as it was envisioned, and a first quarter of 2021 that continues to show the support of readers for the physical spaces and printed books.

During the first quarter of 2019, the global amount of sales totaled 85 million Euros.  In 2020 it was 78 million and in 2021 the sales figure is higher, at 87 million Euros. By genre, non-fiction is the one most demanded by readers, with sales exceeding 35 million Euros, followed by fiction (24 million) and children and young adult literature (17 million Euros). Of all of them, narrative has been the one that has experienced the greatest increase in sales compared to previous years, since it has increased from around 19 million to 24 million invoiced during the first quarter of 2021.
