Poet Justo Jorge Padrón dies of coronavirus

His work has been translated into more than thirty languages, achieving success in 1977 with the publication of 'Los círculos del infierno' (The Circles of Hell).

The 77-year-old poet, who was in a "moment of great creative inspiration" was about to release a new collection of poems.

The poet from Gran Canaria Justo Jorge Padrón, winner of the Canary Islands Prize for Literature and one of the most recognized authors of his generation in Spain, died last Sunday in Madrid at the age of 77 from Covid-19, as reported by Vitruvio Publishing yesterday. In 1970 ‘Los oscuros fuegos’ (The Dark Fires) was published and in 1977 he achieved his first great recognition with the publication of 'Los círculos del infierno' (The Circles of Hell), which was awarded the Fastenrath Prize from the Real Academia Española (Royal Spanish Academy). That same year, he went to Stockholm to collect the Nobel Prize for Literature awarded to the poet Vicente Aleixandre, who could not attend the ceremony for health reasons.
