The Instituto Cervantes celebrates 30 years as "The flagship of Spanish cultural diplomacy".

The institution charged with promoting our language and culture abroad, commemorates three decades of existence and reflects on its role for the future.

On March 22, 1991, the Boletín Oficial del Estado (Official State Bulletin) decreed that the Instituto Cervantes would be entrusted with “the task of defending, promoting, studying and teaching the languages ??and cultures of Spain and the language and culture in Spanish,” as recalled this Thursday its director, Luis García Montero. The use of the plural in the first part of this definition and the inclusion of the preposition "in" in the second, add "an important expression" to the work: in addition to the language and culture in Spanish, it is also their mission, and in this, the current director tends to emphasize the promotion of Basque, Galician and Catalan; and in addition to Spanish culture, it also promotes the cultural expressions and linguistic varieties of the entire Spanish-speaking universe, which today is made up of 493 million native speakers.

This task continues today after 30 years, with 88 centers spread over 45 countries around the world, this "flagship of Spanish cultural diplomacy", says Ángeles Moreno, the Secretary of State for International Cooperation, a branch of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs which supports the Cervantes Institute.
