María del Socorro Tellado López, better known as Corín Tellado, was the most famous author of the romantic novel and a bestseller who became the most widely read Spanish-language author after Miguel de Cervantes.

She wrote some five thousand books, which critics described as minor literature, but which put her at the top of the public's favor. She also wrote other genres such as children and young adult stories and even erotic novels.

Corín Tellado was born on April 25, 1927, in Viavélez, a village in the Asturian municipality of El Franco. She was the daughter of a housewife and a merchant marine engineer. As a child, her siblings called her Socorrín, which is the name by which she is remembered: Corín. After the civil war the family moved to Bilbao and then to Cádiz.
