El Confidencial talks to Luis Mateo Díez, winner of the Cervantes Prize 2023

A radiant sun entered the house of Luis Mateo Díez (Villablino, León, 1942) on the day of this interview.

A brightness that highlighted the pictures of his friends hanging on the walls - "I have always been surrounded by painters and poets"- and his literary awards, which are already numerous. The latest, the greatest of Spanish literature, the Cervantes, which he will receive on April 23.

The writer is one of the most prolific of our times and since the eighties he debuted with force with iconic novels such as “La fuente de la edad.” Then he created the mythical universe of “Celama” and gave voice to the simple lives, to the often-reviled life of the provinces. And he earned the respect of critics and many readers who have followed him later in the famous “filandones” (after diner discussions) he makes with his friends José María Merino and Juan Pedro Aparicio.
