Book sales in Spain reach historical highs in 2023

The Germán Sánchez Ruipérez Foundation (FGSR) and the Federation of National Associations of Editorial Distributors (FANDE) hosted on Wednesday, February 21, ..

the presentation of the Book Market in Spain 2023 report, carried out by the company GfK, in an event held in the Foundation Headquarters, in Matadero Madrid. The event had the presence and participation of José Manuel Anta (FANDE), Ofelia Grande (Editorial Siruela); Elena Martínez (Serendipias Bookstore); Álvaro García Barbero (AGA Graphics); Antonio Castillo (Distriforma Distributor), and Luis González (GSR Foundation).

From the data obtained in the report we can gather that the publishing sector in Spain is experiencing, since the pandemic, a very favorable time, something that is reflected in the sales data that shows continued growth since it has kept increasing since 2020.  In 2023, the industry’s  turnover reached 1,150 million euros, 4% more than in 2022, this being the highest figure since this data was first recorded.

A figure that, furthermore, exceeds all forecasts since in September, José Ignacio López, head of Market Intelligence at GfK, the company that prepared the report, announced in the Edita Forum a growth of more than 1% that could reach 2, 3% at the end of the year. However, it is key to compare these billing data with the copies sold, where almost 75 million printed books were sold, a figure that remains stable compared to 2022.
