72% of Books Published in Spain During 2019 Were Printed on Paper

(Statistics of the Spanish Edition of Books with ISBN from the Ministry of Culture and Sports), the total production of books in Spain was estimated at 90,073 copies. This study offers indicators related to the books inscribed with an ISBN throughout the year, considering “book” any scientific, artistic, literary or any printed work in any other médium that can be read.

Among the most significant data in 2019 are: the number of books registered with an ISBN in 2019 was 90,073, which means an increase of 10.9% from 2018, a figure that practically compensates for the year-on-year decreases observed in 2018 and represents an increase in the biennium of 0.1%. The evolution is largely due again by the actions of the autonomous community of Catalonia.

72.5% of the total books registered with an ISBN, or 65,303 are books printed on paper and the rest 24,770 represent 27.5% in other médiums, ebooks as well as those published or available on Internet.  In 2019 first editions rose to 87,600 books and second editions were 2,477, which translates respectively to 97.3% and 2.7% of the total.  The number of active publishers in 2019 was 3,170 with an average production of 28 books from each one of them.
