The writer Iris Zavala dies, mirror of the social function of literature

The puertorican, a student of Unamuno and an expert in literary historiography, has died at the age of 84. Professor Iris Zavala Zapata has occupied a determined place in the studies of Spanish literature and her career may be taken as a sample of the same evolution as Hispanism.

Although she graduated in Puerto Rico, she came to Salamanca to do her doctorate under the teachings of Fernando Lázaro Carreter, then professor at that University. Her initial dedication was to Unamuno, about whom she had already published a thesis in 1963 and to whom she later returned several times in different essays.

This tendency is very characteristic of her intellectual career, since Iris Zavala went through different stages of literary criticism, as she discovered different dialogs of literary theory. Apart from specific studies, her most important contributions were dedicated to literary Historiography, which she always related to the ideological discussions of the time.
