Finalists are Announced for “Los Cerros de Úbeda” Literary Award.

The organization that handles “Los Cerros de Úbeda” literary award competition has revealed the finalists being considered for the award. This accolade is given to the best historical novel of the previous year, in this case, 2018.

Out of the many works considered three will compete for the award:

  • “Valkirias. Las hijas del norte” (Valkyries. The Daughters of the north) by I. Biggi

The year is 859.  A Viking fleet travels to Seville, one of the richest cities of the time to raid and pillage.  However, things don’t turn out as expected and the warriors from the North are apprehended by the city governor, who demands an exorbitant amount for their rescue.

  • “La Tierra Maldita” (The Accursed Land) by Juan Francisco Ferrándiz

In the IX century Barcelona is at the farthest end of the Holy Roman Empire.  Governned by the Franks from far away, the city of barely fifteen hundred souls, has been left to fend for itself.  Besieged by hundreds of attempts at conquest from Saracens and savage hordes and subjected to the tyranni of corrupt nobles who exploit the population.

  • “Como Grano de Mostaza” (Like a mustard seed) by David Fernández Fernández

This novel, which mixes historical with fictional characters, transfers us to the kingdom of Castille in the early XVI century; a crucial time in history where different ideologies converge.
