The Spanish Government and the City of Los Angeles are discussing the opening of a Cervantes Institute

“The future of Spanish is being decided in the USA”, says the director of the Institution, Luis García Montero.

The center in the Californian city, with its 48% Latin population, would be a kind of ‘Casa de America’ for all Hispanic culture. The Cervantes Institute is in negotiations with the Los Angeles municipality about opening a center in the Californian city, which has the largest Hispanic population of any US city. The organization has decided to prioritize the LA project over that of Washington DC’s, which had been the initial plan, due to the interest it has encountered in the Californian city and also in response to the ‘political meanness’ against Hispanic culture found in the USA, stated Cervantes director Luis Garcia Montero this Friday in Madrid. Garcia Montero appeared before the Commission for External Affairs of the Spanish Congress to lay out the priorities and the 4.3% budget increase proposed for the Cervantes Institute by the government. “The future of Spanish is being decided in the USA”, began Garcia Montero. The plan was to open a new center in the nation’s capital. “We have decided that perhaps it’s better for Spain to open it in Los Angeles”.
