Maite Carranza and Elia Barceló, winners of the 27th Edebé Prize

Maite Carranza (Barcelona, 1958), with the novel Safari and Elia Barceló (Alicante, 1957), with El efecto Frankenstein (The Frankenstein Effect), are the winners of the 27th Edebé Prize for Children’s and Juvenile Literature.

Two stories that oddly enough connect the literature of the past with the present day, dealing with issues like gender equality, women’s lib and empathy, making us think about inequality, difference and indifference. With her absurd humor, Maite Carranza, writer and anthropologist , pays homage to one of her childhood heroes, Tarzan of the Apes, at the same time inviting us to learn from our intelligent ancestors, the primates, to become more human, more fair and more humble. Safari tells the story of Dani, who, after a mishap at the zoo years before, decides to stop talking and thenceforth only communicates in sign language.
