The Presence of Small Bookstores is on the Increase

While the crisis of the economy strongly affected the bookstores, to the point that, starting in 2008, stores began to close every day, the phenomenon has finally stopped and now it has begun to reverse.

Currently there are 3,967 bookstores in Spain, and, since 2014, their number continues to grow moderately. Also, their income has increased by 3.6 percent over the previous year, from 736,409,644 euros to 763,181,739 euros. These are data from the Observatorio de las librerías 2016 (Observatory of Bookstores 2016) report, which was made public at the Ministry of Education and Culture with the participation of the Spanish Confederation of Booksellers' Guilds and Associations (CEGAL), and prepared by the University of Zaragoza. The report focuses only on small and medium-size bookstores, and does not include large stores, bookstore chains with more than 50 employees, online-only bookstores and those that sell second-hand or antique books.
