Five charred corpses, along with five cowrie shells, are found after a brutal explosion at the New York clinic where Nagorno has been operated on to try to save his life. Fearing that the bodies belong to the Old Family, in revenge for the murder of Mother, the bloodthirsty matriarch of the Sons of Adam, Gunnarr decides to flee with Adriana to avoid being next.

Bristol, 1352:

Gunnar, captain of a ship that transports pilgrims to the coasts of Galicia, lives an intense romance with Mother. But when she discovers that he is a direct descendant of her great enemy Lür, whom she cursed millennia ago, Gunnarr realizes that the entire Old Family is in danger.

Present, Massachusetts:

Iago suffers a memory gap due to the shock of seeing Adriana die. After waking up in the farmhouse that he shared with Manon Adams in Plymouth four centuries ago, he begins to suspect that his former wife wants to turn him over to her enemies.

Present, Bali:

Lür tries to locate Iago and track down the leaders of the clan branches to broker a truce, now that Adana is dead. He trusts that the Diplomats can help him, but fears that the Hunters, who revere Mother's heart, intend to assassinate the entire Old Family once and for all. What he does not imagine is that Nagorno, bearer of Mother's heart, has plans of his own: to become the patriarch of the Sons of Adam.
