La carcel de aire takes us into the mysterious and sophisticated world of art and white-collar thieves. After spending her childhood in an orphanage, Carlota, the protagonist of this novel, ekes out a living in a Madrid not made for mere wage earners. She owes several months' rent, repeatedly avoids her landlady to avoid paying, and can't make ends meet on her meager waitress salary.

The owner of the bar where she works suggests she earns a little extra money by catering in an art gallery full of posh people. Carlota accepts the offer and takes the opportunity to 'distract' herself during the art exhibition with a couple of watercolors that could give her failing finances a little boost. After managing to escape with the watercolors stuck to her body during the commotion that erupts at the art exhibition due to the alarm raised over the disappearance of several works of art, Carlota believes she is out of danger and begins to celebrate her feat when she is surprised by Armando, a white-collar thief and art expert who convinces Carlota to become his student in the art of museum theft.
