One of the fundamental novels of contemporary Spanish literature.
In 1962, La ciudad y los perros received the Biblioteca Breve Prize and was published a few months later after circumventing Franco's censorship. Thus began the literary journey of this work, with which Mario Vargas Llosa achieved international recognition and is today considered one of the best Spanish-language novels of the 20th century.
Translated into thirty languages, it is set in the Leoncio Prado Military College. The protagonists, a group of youngsters "educated" in a ruthless and violent military discipline, learn to survive in an environment where racial prejudices and differences between social and economic classes are deeply rooted. Where everyone reveals themselves as they are not, and breaking established rules seems to be the only way out.
