The play begins with the death of Bernarda Alba's second husband and two maids chatting, commenting that only her daughter Magdalena loved the deceased, discussing the ugliness and lack of qualities of the daughters, that the eldest daughter Angustia is the daughter of her first husband and the one with the money, that the thirty years she has served Bernarda are a condemnation for her, and that the day she dies, she will take revenge against Bernarda. It then details the wake or mourning with those who participated.

After all this, Bernarda decides to mourn for eight years, a mourning that entails confinement and seclusion for the four daughters of her second husband. The only one to be freed from this confinement is the eldest daughter of her first husband, since she is engaged to be married to Pepe el Romano. Each of the daughters will take a stand: Magdalena and Amelia resign themselves to what they have to live with; Martirio rebels with hatred and envy towards Angustias and Adela; Adela shows her rebellion by rebelling, wanting to enjoy her youth, and becomes the lover of Pepe el Romano, her sister Angustias's fiancé.
