Among the authors included in this excellent selection of the best 20th century Hispanic-American essays are Alfonso Reyes, Fernando Ortiz, José Carlos Mariategui, Enrique Anderson Imbert, Alejo Carpentier, Octavio Paz and Carlos Monsiváis. A sometimes forgotten genre in Hispanic-American literary histories, but certainly not due to a lack of superior writers and profound works, comparable to the highest essayistic achievements at the international level.
