The adventures of Aniceto Hevia, the son of a thief (“hijo de ladrón”) and protagonist of this novel is clearly a major achievement in mid-20th-century Chilean social literature. Writer Manuel Rojas did not need to probe his imagination or creativity to create his novels and short stories: an attentive ear for reproducing popular speech and a concern for putting day-to-day experiences down on paper was enough. Yet this novel surpasses all that, ensuring that Hijo de ladrón, its protagonist and Rojas’s fiction overall become more than mere genre work, and transforming the most simple and local material into beautiful literature.
