Many of us who have been devoted followers since we discovered the existence of literature back in the 60's -when we used to pass from hand to hand books edited by Pinilla in Libropueblo editions- are stunned by the phenomenon of Pinilla. In later years he has not only rewritten his monumental Green Valleys, Red Hills (Verdes valles, colinas rojas, 3 vol. Tusquets, 2005-2006), the first volume of which was first published in the 80's and which now culminates in this excellent trilogy, but also now offers us a surprising work called The Fig Tree (La Higuera), Set in his native Getxo, Pinilla creates a narrative centered on the thorny theme of political reprisals in the aftermath of the Civil War. The relation between the protagonist, a Falangist and author of the reprisals, and a boy, child of the victims, serves as the framework in which to brilliantly expose the irrationality of those years, which today we wish were prehistoric. We are fortunate to have this new offering by Ramiro Pinilla, a writer who is currently enjoying overdue recognition, after having received the Euskadi Prize for the Novel in 2005, the Critic's Award in 2005 and the National Narrative Award in 2006.
