Edgardo Rodríguez Julía, one of the most important writers in Puerto Rico, wrote this novel in 1983 and it is considered one of the seminal works of modern Puerto Rican literature. El entierro de Cortijo uses the death of Rafael Cortijo, one of the most famous musician in the island to describe the roots of Afro Puerto Rican music and its impact in its society. As the processional travels through the working class and impoverish neighborhood streets alike, Rodríguez Julía exposed the richness and contradictions of Puerto Rican society, black and white and all the colors in between, and immerses the reader in the richness of the music, and of the people who creat it and enjoy it.
